Uncornered : A Book Review
We live in a Vuca world, a world where conditions and situations can be volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous. The boss who sets the targets may leave mid-way and the year-end performance is reviewed by a new boss, or the key targets set at the start of the year may become redundant as the organization faces new and unexpected challenges, or the company might get acquired by another company. In such turbulent times, “the risk of becoming redundant and the need to reinvent one’s career suddenly becomes very real and one cannot depend on one’s employer to solve the crisis in such situations”, writes career and executive coach Luis Moniz in his new book Uncornered: Learnings From The Corner Office.
The word "Uncornered" is coined by Luis Moniz and he defines it as a key attribute to achieve superior success in a turbulent world.
The book highlights that the traditional themes of loyalty, hard work, dedication and dependence on our employers for career progression are no longer effective for our success. We need to take charge of our careers to achieve superior success compared to our peers.

After acquiring a degree and entering the corporate world, professionals often face a "what next ?" situation, constantly floating on their minds in these turbulent times and often these situations are beyond their control. They try to emulate their role models to seek practical guidance. Therefore, there is a need to adopt new methods and approaches that will enable them to achieve their professional aspirations which this book rightfully offers.
The book consists of three themes: Mindset, Performance, Enablers which helps the readers to widen their perspective and have a proper process right from adopting a mindset to implementation through performance and enabling oneself to achieve his or her professional aspirations.
The book is timely and topical. Full of insights from professionals performing exceptionally well in their careers who are interviewed by Luis Moniz. The best part is the storytelling format which makes it riveting with perspectives and key learnings.
Each one of us has enormous potential as a professional and this book can be useful to change our self-belief about ourselves and widen our perspectives and envision our careers understanding the rapidly changing world. The need to shift roles as a professional and the adaptability which is much needed.
As an 18-year-old in an undergraduate course, this book has helped me to understand the magnitude of the constantly evolving world and that a disruptive evolving technology can replace manpower. To my mind, it is imperative that apart from our degrees there is a need to develop a skill set, we need to understand as aspiring professionals to achieve our goals we need to view our careers as series of roles and to maintain our focus on upgrading ourselves by courses, skill development programmes, workshops for creating credentials which are relevant for our possible next level roles. I recommend this book to everyone who is seeking guidance or are stuck in their mid-careers.
